How to use hair rollers:

Fashionista: What is the advantage of rollers vs. an iron?
Johnny Lavoy: The advantages of using rollers over other hot tools are that you can get a longer lasting curl, more volume, and it can be less damaging on the hair.
Is there a certain size roller you should use depending on your hair length?
The size of the roller will determine how much curl or volume you want. The smaller the roller, the tighter the curl. Larger rollers will give you more wave or volume. You want to choose a size according to length of your hair and the desired result.
What products should you use to prep hair?
The type of rollers you use will determine what products you want to prep with. For hot rollers, hair should be dried with a setting product (like L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Root Lifting Spray) or a heat activating spray. I also love using the Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5 Multi-Restorative Dry Oil as a heat protectant. If you are using velcro rollers, setting the hair then misting with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Stain Hairspray is a great way to boost volume. If you are going to do a wet set, you want to use a smoothing cream. Wet sets typically are more time consuming.

So once the prep is done, what are the steps?
When using rollers it’s important to section the hair. Sections should be no wider than the roller you are using and should be about two inches in thickness. A fail-proof set is rolling everything back starting with a mohawk section then repeating on both sides .
How long do you leave them in?
If you’re using hot rollers, you should take them down after they are completely cooled. Velcro rollers should be first hit with the heat of a blow dryer then let to cool – usually about 15 minutes. Wet set should be taken down when the hair is completely dry.
What products should you use afterwards?
Once rollers are out, hairspray and a brush will, in most cases, give you a long lasting style. You can also add a few drops of smoothing serum to control frizz or flyaways.
I found this really helpful so I wanted to share this:
